I'm halfway through this and I have to stop. I narrowly avoided being committed to one of these places in high school and I just cannot even imagine some of the things patients must go through. They must feel so helpless. Thank you for your work in this area; I'm going to check out the CAFETY website.

suited up in an 80-pound backpack; by afternoon, the heat had topped 80 degrees, and he was soon staggering, drifting off the trail, and complaining of dizziness and exhaustion. Staffers contended he was faking his symptoms

WHAT is wrong with people??!

Don't you know? Those stupid kids are all a bunch of fakers and attention grabbers. Real disabled kids wouldn't bother complaining about pain, he's just using disability to gain pity.

I hear that shit every fucking day.

good looking out for yourself. so much of it really is torture. the org was founded by survivors who found each other and wanted to keep others from having to go through it. unfortunately, the task is ridiculously hard, particularly since attempts to pass federal regulation-related legislation face opposition every time. (apparently, corporate and/or state rights > human rights. SURPRISE!)
we are in the process of working to upgrade the website, so if you can't find anything, please comment or PM me.

Hearing about Brendan's death is not surprising at all considering how kids with DDs are treated no better than cattle.

According to court transcripts and police reports, the two poorly paid monitors on duty did little more than offer him water, Sprite and Pepto-Bismol. They never telephoned the on-call nurse and waited until nearly 2 a.m. to contact the on-call supervisor, only to leave a voicemail. There was little else they felt they could do - Youth Care’s protocol on emergency services meant they were too low on the totem pole to call 911 themselves.Jesus, they were so afraid of loosing their jobs or getting backhanded by their supervisors that they let the kid die. How the blue fuck are they not qualified or allowed to call an ambulance? Because fuck, if a kid in my lunch room starts having a gran mal seizure or in a lot of heavy pain, you damn well bet I am calling for the admins and 911. Doesn't matter than I am just a lowly part time aid, I am not sitting on my GD thumbs ( ... )

Also, why the hell is someone of higher rank only allowed to dial emergency services? That sounds shady as hell.
