Pretending You’re Oppressed: The New Internet Fad

Jun 24, 2012 23:27

On top blogging sites like Tumblr and Livejournal, the biggest new fandom is no longer anime or evening fantasy drama, but that of “SJ,” a nickname for “social justice,” which refers to discourse on equal rights and how to, essentially, be kind and respectful to all people. As a trans person of color, I have used these platforms as a means of ( Read more... )

discrimination, fuckery, cultural appropriation, honkeyshines

I kind of want to hug this post, give it tea, and knit it cozy hats.

I just imagined Castiel knitting cozy hats and now I am full of all kinds of glee. What a cute mental image.

This post deserves that kind of mental image.

/I have been raging about transabled people for about a month since another disabled trans friend of mine linked me and I don't think there's a level of me that has not experienced absolute rage over this.

honestly whenever someone tells me they're demisexual i'm just like... oh, so you're trying to sound like a special and unique snowflake, basically? because only having sex with people you're emotionally connected to is basically society's perfect ideal of sex and relationships, when it's not "sex only with someone you're married to." you're not oppressed for being the fucking ideal. sit down. also, there's kind of something slutshamey about the whole concept, like, "oh, i'm not like all those oooother wh*res who just sleep with whoever they like! i need an EMOTIONAL CONNECTION!" pat yourself on the back, sweetheart, that makes you such a good and different person.

EXCEPT NOT.

I've always felt like it's an okay term for purely classification purposes, like, if people want a really shorthand way of stating their preferences, but to act like it's a source of oppression? lol no. It's nice to have a good grasp on in what circumstances you want to have sex and it's fine to have a word for it, but to make it a label as some sort of minority status is utterly ridiculous.

yeah, i guess i can see using that as like a label for yourself in matters of dating. it just confuses the hell out of me when people are like "oh i came out as demisexual" or have it listed in their tumblr bio or whatever, like "my name is blah, i'm 20, and i'm demisexual" because WHY IS THAT RELEVANT INFORMATION TO SOMEONE WHO CLICKS ON YOUR TUMBLR PROBABLY JUST WANTING TO KNOW YOUR NAME AND INTERESTS AND WHAT YOU POST IDGI?????

hahaha oh man, great article. I just heard about the transethnic bs the other day and beyond being offensive, I'm just... really embarrassed for these people. I hadn't heard of transabled but WOW.

I know furries have been sort of co-opting the gay rights language for a while. It's frustrating when people can't distinguish between a fetish and someone's innate sexuality.

I'm reading the mothership post and apparently people who are 'transethnic' (and I can't stop lolling over this) are telling others they have 'cisethnic privilege'

seriously, go to tumblr and search the "transethnic" tag.

It'll make your eyes bug out when you get past the mocking and get to the serious-as-dirt people.
