I'm sure Cheney doesn't really see the problem this way, because he really believes that his own deserve a different set of rights and privileges than the rest of us losers.
"Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized."
Those words belie his mindset of gaming the system from a position of power; he was using such language when 9/11 happened. He would like to see it as a window that they slipped through and ideally would now be closed after them, so that his kid can stay married but the rest of you missed your opportunity.
A bit like 'the only moral abortion is my abortion.' My daughter and her wife are totally not perverts bent on destroying society, all those other queers though.
Of course, Cheney's always struck me as a douche who firmly believes he and his own are entitled to everything while us plebes haven't 'earned' it like he has. Asshole.
Whatever I think about Obama playing politics with same-sex marriage I do think it was nice he did it during an election. Cheney and Laura Bush and all of the others waited until they were out of the White House and 'safe' to go against GOP policy. I can't.
Cheney is the most cynical of politicians. If he thought supporting gay marriage on a federal level would benefit him and his interests in any way, he would be scream it from the roof tops.
Courage has nothing to do with it. Cheney chose to court social conservatives while in office. He knew what he was doing. For him it was worth it to achieve his neocon goals. He isn't going to admit his position on gay marriage was wrong because he has no regrets about it.
That being said, I'm happy for his daughter and her partner. Congrats to them.
