Canadians travel great distances to return tsunami bike to Japanese owner

Call it the brotherhood of the travelling bike.

For many Canadian bikers the storied journey of the Harley-Davidson bike from Japan to B.C.'s rocky shores after last years' tsunami will not be complete until it is reunited with its original owner.

Since it was pulled from a remote beach on Haida Gwaii, volunteers have looked after the bike every ( Read more... )

Thank you for posting this, I really needed a good story to read and this is really sweet. It really flies in the face of the general opinion of 'bikers' people can sometimes have.

Yeah, bikers/motorcyclists are absolutely not all members of outlaw clubs. The ones I've known have used their legit clubs to do a great deal of charity work, in addition to providing a way for members to access a supportive community without having to belong to a church. BMWBMW in the Baltimore-Washington metro area is a great example, although I am biased because until my dad got too sick to ride, he was very active with them, including being part of the leadership.

I grew up hearing sensationalist news stories about the Hell's Angels. Then I lived in a town where many came through and they were, by the late '80s, mainly just old men in leathers.

Then I moved to BC where they'd basically sold their brand to become a crime syndicate. And some of those people are psychopaths IMO...so I can see why people get confused. I mean, ideally they'd realize that the mode of transportation has nothing to do with personal behaviour but classism plays a part too.

Sorry if this brings you down again. Lolcats Genesis!

Oh no way did not bring down at all, I was thinking of the Hell's Angels when I posted.

The Hell's Angels in BC are pretty bad and totally not about motorcycles anymore at all in BC.

Oh it was in a container packed in styrofoam. Well that hardly counts then. When I first heard this story, I thought it was just a bike floating across the Pacific. Still cool story though.

Bikers may not have the best reputations, but they really do seem to look after their own and are very loyal. This is awesome and I'm so glad that people are helping those who lost so much.
