I've wondered this since it has never been answered -
how different or not are the suicide rates of the works at Foxconn compared to other manufacturing facilities - or comparable to similar sample populations of that size.

Rates compared to the US

Rates compared to China and New Zealand

The suicide rates are actually lower than the Chinese national average, and lower than the average for their age group as well.

What a reasonable person should get from reading this article: Chinese factory workers are so grossly underpaid that they're worried that they won't be able to make any money at all if they're not working 16 hour days.

What a disturbing amount of people will get from reading this article: This proves that Chinese people have a better work ethic and they're not being exploited at all. They want to work 16 hour days and we're hurting them by not letting them do that.

That's exactly what I was thinking reading this article - how so many people will get it wrong.

Ok, ignoring working conditions and whatnot, 4000 rmb a month isn't bad. I mean, I don't know how much it costs for them to live at the compound and their general expenses. I live in Beijing and my monthly budget tops out at 3000 rmb a month. I live in a really nice newer apartment by my school (with roommates), eat out basically every day at least once, go out every weekend, taxi when I feel like it, etc. Obviously it is different when you have dependents and whatnot but with the cost of living generally hear, that salary is definitely manageable.
