I work in mainstream media. Editors pull cartoons and images they deem problematic all the time. I call total shenanigans on that statement.

In other news, that is a crap cartoon.

It's a bit more complicated when the publication in question is a university publication, particularly at a public institution. College newspapers are usually funded by some sort of fee that everyone pays, and when you're taking that kind of money there are a lot of regulations about how, basically, you have to let everyone play. If the newspaper refused to publish it, the cartoonist probably could have sued them. I've seen it happen. :/

So are the publications at my university, they still get some or all funding from the student government, though.

Edit: From that same wiki article: "More recently, it has been argued that because students were compelled to fund the paper through the payment of mandatory student service fees..."

I haven't read the comments you're referring to, but even Allen West has called for Zimmerman's arrest and blasted the Sanford police department, in very strong terms:

from TPM

Yeah, it surprised me too!

That's got to be the most amateurishly-drawn cartoon I've ever seen. I smell a hoax.

"Amateurish" is being extremely generous, holy shit.

i especially like how the book is apparently named "MARTIN CASE OF JOURNALS TREYVON AND THE YELLOW"

maybe crappy art is proportional to stupidity of opinions. would explain a lot!

I completely agree with the diversity training. Racism under the heading of journalism is still racism.

anyone know if this paper runs Doonesbury, and if they ran it during the abortion ultrasound law strips?

ETA: Nevermind, looks like they only have student strips
