Chicago - A man shot by an off-duty police detective during a confrontation early Wednesday in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood has been charged with assault.

Antonio Cross, 39, of the 7100 block of South Ridgeland Avenue, was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault in connection with the incident about 1 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 15th Place, according to police News Affairs.

Police could not immediately say whether authorities recovered a weapon from the scene of the shooting.
I don't understand this. Either you did recover a weapon that you can definitively tie to this guy with prints, or you didn't and... Ohhhhh.

He also went to WGN, and they too reiterate that police say they didn't recover a weapon from the scene (trigger warning, just to be safe):

What the fuck, Cross is the one being charged? HE DIDN'T FUCKING DO ANYTHING. He was on the phone and some trigger-happy moron thought it'd be a good idea to shoot - in WHAT way is Cross guilty of a crime?

He is guilty of holding a phone while being black. Because the only thing that black men hold is a weapon, obviously.

......

WTF that guy saying 'it's justified' and WTF, charging the guy who got shot with some asinine charge.

This is just *all kinds* of fucked up. Being it sounded like a kind of party or something, i hope some people were recording this when it happened.

Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, the police union says, an off-duty detective rolled down his car window and asked a group of people gathered near Douglas Park to quiet down. In response, police say, a 39-year-old man pointed a gun at the officer, who drew his own weapon and fired.

Nope, I don't believe this shit. Some dude pulled a gun on a police officer just for him telling them to quiet down? And nobody's been charged with a gun crime? NOPE.

Seriously. Of course, if a Chicago Police officer told me the sky was blue during a sunny day? I'd have to go check.

There are things I love about Chicago, but seriously the corruption in that city is mind boggling, and the police are the most violent and visible symptom.

I don't even get why it is a good idea for an off duty cop to have a gun on them when they're not working.

In the video schmanda posted above, I think it says the off-duty officer was investigating a complaint. So I guess he took it upon himself to put in some extra work... aka, shoot an innocent woman and a man on a cell phone.

Because they can get called onto duty with little to no warning, especially in large cities, and because as first responders they're supposed to have everything on hand.
