'Birth tourism' may change citizenship rules
Canada, U.S. only developed countries that grant automatic citizenship to babies born on their soil

The Harper government is considering changes to the citizenship rules to target so-called birth tourism - where a foreign national comes to Canada to give birth so the baby can get Canadian citizenship.

I don't know what it's like in Canada, but in the States, isn't it not as simple as just being born on American soil? Like, doesn't a baby have to live here for a full year after it's born, or something like that? I clearly know nothing about immigration law. haha

Either way, I hope this doesn't pass, and I hop ti doesn't give America any ideas. :/

ALSO, this is the first time I've ever seen the phrase "birth tourism" and I hope to Glob it's the last. I doubt there are any rich pregnant Swedes jetting off to North America for the weekend to get their newborn American citizenship and then going home.

“We need to send the message that Canadian citizenship isn’t just some kind of an access key to the Canadian welfare state by cynically misrepresenting yourself.… It’s about having an ongoing commitment and obligation to the country.”
Seriously, what is this shit?

No, in the US, anyone born in the states or territories is a citizen. People born in certain other US 'possessions' (Like the Panama Canal zone or American Samoa) have to meet other conditions, like a citizen parent and living there for a year after they're born.

Now that I think about, I think what I'm thinking of are the citizenship requirements for children born abroad whose parents have American citizenship, or something like that.

Of course birth tourism is a serious threat to any country. Fox News said so.

Maybe next, Canada can tackle the ultra-important issue of ACORN registering fake voters.

I agree completely.

I'm from Quebec and I WANT US TO BE AS COOL AS THE PEOPLE OF VANCOUVER WHO PROTESTED AGAINST THIS FRAUD.

I don't understand why people aren't in the streets right now protesting about this here, tbh.

have their children obtain citizenship and later sponsor them.
Okay... people clearly have no fucking concept of how hard and complicated it is to sponsor someone and if I remember correctly, I belive you have to wait until you are an adult to sponsor anyone.

Also, this law would be terrible for immigrants who are waiting to get their citizenship (it takes at least 3 years to get it).

In the US, you need to be 21, and then you get put on a waiting list.
