I'd never heard of Wipeout until yesterday and from what I can tell only having read what it's about, it sounds just like Takeshi's Castle, in which case shouldn't our embarrassment just transfer over to Japan?

Pretty much, except that Takeshi's Castle (and MXC by extension) was awesome just based on the sheer WTFness of some of the challenges whereas Wipeout pretty much uses the same boring blow-up obstacles and water pit for every single challenge/episode.
