Minor Senate bill sparks major debate on ethics

Feb 02, 2012 22:11

In a sign of just how unpopular Congress has become, rank-and-file senators hijacked a debate over a narrowly tailored ethics bill and won broad approval Thursday of a more far-reaching reform package that would impose new conflict-of-interest rules and mandate more transparency on K Street.

This is mass repentance for past sins

No. Fuck you, Droopy. Like you assholes are going to follow the law anyway.

You guys do realize that this isn't going to make anyone like you. WE STILL DON'T TRUST YOU.

Freshman Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) proposed that former members of Congress forfeit their federal pension and insurance plans if they become lobbyists after retiring from Capitol Hill. Not to be outdone, Sen. Michael F. Bennet (D-Colo.) offered an amendment that would impose a lifetime ban on lawmakers becoming federal lobbyists. Former staff members, currently facing a one-year prohibition on lobbying their former congressional bosses, would have faced a six-year moratorium.

See, now THESE I like. I also don't think you should get a pension for sitting on your ass in congress for one term. Fuck that noise.

... but of COURSE these got scuttled. In private talks, naturally.

So you're all going to try and make it look like you're playing by the rules? Well, fuck you all, because we KNOW you won't, and even if you somehow all grow a shred of a conscience and DO start playing by the rules, IT'S NO MORE THAN WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPECTED OF YOU FROM THE START.

You are CIVIL SERVANTS. You SERVE the PUBLIC! And that means, while you all are in fact members of the public, you SERVE THE MAJORITY BEFORE you serve yourselves!

It is way too early to be this shouty.

It's like this bizarre 'I have morals! Look!!' race, with everybody scrambling to come up with something that looks good. I mean - yay for ethics and morals! but i don't really believe that they'll abide by their decisions.
