I was going to call this post "The Poultry Industry's Dirty Secret," but then I got to thinking: Isn't that too broad? It raises the question of which dirty secret-the fact that it turns independent family farmers into low-income serfsRead more... )

Yeah, I don't buy already breaded food and I wash my chicken before I use it.

Tyson is the most dangerous meat company to get chicken from. They harbor the most deadly bacteria of any chicken company. I really recommend switching to a different brand of chicken for your own safety.

And people wonder why I don't eat meat.

Why I'm gradually lowering my meat consumption and upping my veg-only recipe box.
(Hard to go vegetarian on college budget/time but I am doing what I can.)

I'd recommend frozen veggies, canned beans (rinse before using), and cheaper grains/legumes like lentils (I know) or brown rice. Also I know it's harder to cook during college, but if you make a big pot of something over the weekend, you can then eat it for the rest of the week.

Yeah I'm planning to make a huge pot of beans packed with onions and peppers and stuff this weekend (crockpot is a lifesaver). I'm packed with frozen veggies that work for side dishes, but some of the main entree type stuff I come across needs fresh ingredients.

I can't afford to buy free range, but my diet needs animal fats in i t, so I just stay aware of which ones are healthiest and disease-free. Here in the US it's Perdue, I think.

OMG YOU TOO? XD I totally have the cow meat cravings during that time.

The issue for me mainly, is that I live in a very small, semi-rural area right now. P. much the only food store of quality? Walmart. Which is really sad. When I move to Nashville later this year, it should be easier for me to make food buying decisions.

Glad I'm vegetarian tbh. I do eat eggs, but when I buy them for myself, I make sure I get free range. otoh I've heard (from Michael Pollan, maybe?) that "free range" isn't that great either. IDEK, it's so hard to buy food ethically. I just hope that growing consumer awareness of treatment of animals will improve the availability (and lower the cost) of ethical meat production.

Free range really depends on where you are getting it from. Free range from a chain like Whole Foods? I wouldn't trust. Free range from a farmer's market is much more reliable.

Yeah, I agree, but there is no farmer's market in the winter.

I feel dumb cause I honestly didn't think about that. Since I live in the South, the farmer's market, at least part of it, stays open all year round.
