GLBT story reminds us that many are bullied by their own family.

This story struck me as a reminder of how many GLBT people are oppressed in ways we can't even imagine. From the very moment  they realize they're different, they're told to shut themselves down by the people closest to them- by their own 'support' groups. Oh god. When I got to the part just above the cut text my stomach dropped because holy shit I knew whatever happened next it would not be good. Who the FUCK would do that to their own kid for any reason.

I'm guessing the OP either meant it sarcastically on the part of the mother, or legitimately for Nathan Hoskins's bravery in standing up to his mother, because that is a relationship that many, many people wouldn't consider breaking off under any circumstance, even abuse.

Seriously, I've been blood-thickeningly angry at my daughter before (though, she's only 2, so I imagine I'll be capable of being much angrier if I think she's gone out of her way to make me angry, as that tends to be more maddening), but I can't imagine being so mad for long enough to drive out somewhere remote and then *threaten her life*.
