Rick Santorum's Google problem remains

Jan 05, 2012 11:16

Rick Santorum, who lost by just eight votes to Mitt Romney in Iowa's caucuses this week, has several roadblocks in the way of transitioning Tuesday's impressive finish to a Republican presidential nomination: a limited war chest, a meager campaign infrastructure and a history of controversial stances on social issues ( Read more... )

I may be alone in this, but the whole fake definition for "santorum" isn't funny to me. As someone who shares a last name with another Republican asshole, I can say from firsthand experience people asking if you're related to them is bad enough. Then there was a thing on urbandictionary trying to equate my last name with something gross. I feel bad for people with the last name Santorum, not only do they have this momentous douchebag with the same name but the internet has run rampant associating their name with fecal matter.

I take exception to the idea that it's bullying because, imo, bullying can only really happen from a place of power. Linking Santorum's name to something he doesn't like has nothing on what he's doing to the LGBT community, and to pretty much any other marginalised group in the US. I mean, yes, there are possible issues with the anal sex part, given anal is generally seen as something engaged in primarily by gay people, but frankly, he and his ideas don't deserve a well-thought-out and intellectual response.

Having been through a couple classrooms where the students bullied the teacher, it's a lot more complicated than that.

I will keep in mind that you are a fan of homophobic, racist, misogynists.

...oh. If it was like that then I take it back. :/

I've just endured so much bullying and bullshit from teachers, and seen so much...I feel like the kids deserve to strike back. Just not on those grounds.

(Though relating this to the OP, I don't think it's comparable if it's like that--we're not picking on Rick Santorum for being part of a marginalized group. We're picking on him for being a bigot.)

I dunno- having been in a school where that situation wasn't uncommon, and being the daughter of a teacher, I'd say that the kids in those situations do have a degree of power. They know that they can do real harm to the teachers while those teachers' hands are effectively tied, and they're very canny about exploiting that. On the other hand, there's nothing the people Santorum stands against can realistically do to hurt him. Exasperate, yes, and irritate like anything, but frankly, he's doing much worse to us.

I agree with you. Santorum's despicable views are steeped in his myriad array of privileges so bullying doesn't seem like the appropriate term. Also, IDGAF even if it were. He's a horrible human being.

Also, Dan's definition isn't saying that anal sex is a Santorum, but rather the by-product of it. Fecal matter is viewed by most people as gross and mixed with lube just makes it gross and funny. Immature yes, but still funny.

I'm really sorry. I know intent isn't magical, but I didn't mean it that way at all.

Again, sorry. :(

And to equate fighting back against such a powerful, privileged oppression with BULLYING, especially when bullying causes so many of our youth to suffer BECAUSE of policies espoused by arseholes like Santorum... well, that is so grossly out of line, I have no words

You're right. I'm sorry that was an extremely poor choice of words. I apologize.

While I do feel sorry for people who are unfortunate to share the name, but the shithead deserved it, especially when he tries to use bullshit psychology to blame LGBT for everything wrong in this country, and this is from someone who massively dislike Dan Savage's extremely White cis biphobic victim blaming ass.

Yeah, that is pretty much my take on it as well.
