Even before the Army sent him to Afghanistan, supporters say, Pvt. Daniel Chen was fighting a personal war.

omg this is heartbreaking.

i almost assumed that the bulling was based on his sexual orientation, because that's been in the news so much recently, but his racial background? that's just all kinds of fucked up. i would assume, maybe this is just me being naive, that the army would at least RECOGNIZE racism.

I posted about this a while ago and the case had been unresolved then.

Total and fucking complete leadership failure. That list is all officers, staff NCOs, and fucking NCOs. THEY ALL SHOULD HAVE FUCKING KNOWN BETTER.

YOUR JOB AS A FUCKING LEADER IS TO MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T FUCKING HAPPEN. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "KIDDING AROUND BETWEEN BROTHERS" AND FUCKING BULLYING, AND IT IS THE LEADERS' JOB TO DRAW THE FUCKING LINE AND PUT PEOPLE BACK IN THEIR PLACE IF THEY FUCKING CROSS IT.

Fucking a, this is goddamn Military Leadership 101, YOU TAKE CARE OF ALL YOUR TROOPS.

"If there was brutality within the unit, that's a betrayal of the bond of brotherhood," he said. "That is, in theory, the underpinning of what holds a military command together."

Exactly.

I was wondering if I could ask (since IIRC, you're a female Marine), what advice would you give to someone who was a WoC joining the military? I've been seriously debating joining the Navy after medical school (which is still a few years away), and while the idea of deployment doesn't bug me, I am worried about what might happen to me as an Asian woman in the military. Although, being an officer and a doctor, I presume I'd be safer than enlisted women.

I also totally understand if you don't want to answer the question/I barked up the wrong tree. It's just that I haven't found a lot of information about this online.

Thanks!

This is actually really helpful!

I was actually wondering if you knew whether or not female docs could deploy green side! If I choose to take one of the medical school scholarships for the Navy, I might end up having to do a GMO tour, and I hear the best one is with the Marines (partly because it only lasts a year), but I'm not sure women are allowed?

It's nice to hear the military doesn't have to be all bad. I'm partly considering joining just because I feel as if I do need the attitude adjustment being in the military would give me (along with wanting to serve my country, understand the military better, etc.), but I would hate to go in and be miserable + inflict my misery on everyone during my repayment.
