What a sad and depressing story. (Worst part: shitty friends and shitty parents.)

Only upside: Women on Web (http://www.womenonweb.org/) just got added to my charities to support list.

How these people are treating her is completely disgusting.

This is so freaking awful. Being prosecuted and ostracized for exercising her right to do what she feels is best for her LIVING children and her body, I can't even. And shame on PP and NARAL for not sticking up for her -- this is supposed to be the kind of thing we're fighting for, right? The fact that she had to resort to ordering abortion pills online instead of being able to get local, unbiased help is like letter for letter what PP constantly talks about.

IKR? How did NARAL and PP not send out action alerts about this?

Because they don't have a useful answer for her. It's not like they can magically find funds and build a local PP in her area. And because she is not a sympathetic plaintiff, and they would much rather challenge this law with a more sympathetic plaintiff. As calculating as that sounds, it makes a big difference in outcomes. You really don't want the "abortion as birth control" plaintiff or the plaintiff who froze a 4-month fetus before the judge or jury. Sadly, good plaintiffs make a difference.

No, but they could have been like, "Look what happens when abortion doesn't get covered."

McCormack, a petite blonde...

Maybe it's just me, but am I the only one who thinks that if she had been black, this wouldn't have made news?

And by news, I mean, people wouldn't bother reporting on it.

I think if she'd been anything BUT petite and a blonde it would have been totally ignored.

well, obviously it's her own fault for having sex. she should learn to deal with the repercussions of her own decision.

obviously.

OBVIOUSLY.

What I love about Conservative thinking is this: "People should learn to deal with the repercussions of their actions...except when it's me."

i just want to rage. i have a friend who is libertarian (and frankly, I share some libertarian ideas with her, so we're not super off the mark) but she's catholic and I am, ya know, against the suppression of women's rights, so she'll say this and I just want to slap something. like, really? the condom could break, the BC could be thrown off for something as minor as herbal supplements, or sometimes, people forget or get caught up in the moment or WHATEVER and you're gonna act all high and mighty when someone is really struggling with this in their life?

lol. If she had been a middle-class woman with the means to go to Salt Lake City and get a hotel room, nobody would have ever known about her abortion, and she'd still be a respectable lady to everyone in her town. This is about keeping the poor oppressed.
