Ayn Rand's polemical 1957 novel "Atlas Shrugged" deals in her pet beliefs: the strength of a market economy, the value of reason, and above all, stone-cold rational self- ( Read more... )

Atlas is quite literally a story about the dangers of self-sacrifice. The error was an unfortunate one and fans of Ayn Rand and Atlas have every right to be upset.

Right, because anything other than being a completely self-absorbed, selfish dickbag is a truly horrific thing.

*facepalm*

On the plus side? Atlas Shrugged has given me an absolute gold standard for instantly evaluating people. If anyone reacts to that piece of shite with admiration or attempts to emulate it, I know to AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE. Society doesn't work if everyone is a monumental self-involved arsehole.

(One of the best things I have ever seen was a 2nd year uni student who argued pro-sexual slavery and objectification of women based on Randian philosophy. EVERY SINGLE STUDENT (most of whom were women) in that class proceeded to then avoid him. In group work, everyone shunned him. When he complained about it, the Lecturer just pointed out that as someone who advocated ideas like that, everyone who shunned him was just acting in their own self-interests. The women because such ideas were actively harmful to them, and the men because, aside from notions of common decency, the women would decide to shun them as well if they were seen to be supporting him. He didn't have a comeback. IT WAS GREAT.)
