Banks Extract Fees On Unemployment Benefits

Out of work and living on a $189-a-week unemployment check, Rob Linville needs to watch every penny. Lately, he has been watching too many pennies disappear into the coffers of the bank that administers his unemployment check via a prepaid debit card.

In the state of WA, all TANF (welfare) has a limit of a $350 withdrawal per day, so if a family is receiving the maximum amount (ex., $478 per month for a family of three) they have to take it out in installments of $340 or less, because atms almost always only use $20 increments. This means atm fees of about $4-8 a month, depending on the availability of low fee atms in the area.

It may not seem like much, but that's at least $50 a year taken away from a family that is receiving a grand total of $5736 a year.

Let's put that another way. BANKS MAKE AT LEAST $50 PER PERSON PER YEAR ON FAMILIES RECEIVING WELFARE.

Talk about a fucking waste of taxpayer money.

My grandma's a tea partier, and she was pretty disgusted by all of this. But of course, she doesn't think the federal government should do anything about it, she thinks the state should handle it, and she only votes for Republicans, so...

lol. There's such a weird division in values and politics in the Tea Party.

Ugh. Yes, the BofA cards are ridiculous. Fortunately, I had another bank account when I was on unemployment in Oregon and I went through the extra paperwork to just get a check I could deposit in my own bank.

US Bank is fucking awful. I banked with them for five years, and it was pretty much five years too long.
