Spain's stolen babies, and the families who lived a lie

Spanish society has been shaken by allegations of the theft and trafficking of thousands of babies by nuns, priests and doctors, which started under Franco and continued up to the 1990s.

I first met Manoli Pagador in Getafe, in a working-class suburb of Madrid. She was attending a meeting for people affected by the scandal Spaniards call "ninos ( Read more... )

"Dr Vela grabbed a metal crucifix which had been standing on his desk. He moved towards me brandishing it in my face. 'Do you know what this is, Katya?' he said. 'I have always acted in His name. Always for the good of the children and to protect the mothers. Enough.'"

If he did what he's accused of (taking into account that at this point he allegedly did it), he's the most hypocritical, vile, unworthy piece of human waste I can imagine. Stealing and selling children, but hiding behind "god"? The worst.

There are a lot of people that get by in life by believing completely and absolutely in a set of beliefs about themselves that doesn't fit with their actions. Big and small, these people are everywhere in almost all walks of life, particularly within religion. They just aren't usually a big problem because they don't usually have power.

Not true at all. There are thousands of people in positions of power around the world who endorse hateful/harmful practices and beliefs and hide behind God to absolve them.

I was referring to the multitude of people that delude themselves around every day in every city and town. Ie: Believing deeply that they're a good person when they clearly aren't. Or believing that they do everything they do for other people and not for money when that just isn't the case.

Religion is how some deluded, sick people get power... but not solely where one can find them.
