On a lighter note, it looks like increasing numbers of Americans are looking to jettison religion out of their marriages as well. The Washington Post reported last week that more Americans are choosing wedding ceremonies without the trappings of religion, including the clergy. Reporter Michele Boorstein finds a crew of college friends who officiate at each other's weddings.

If I ever get married, this is how I'm doing it. =D

Yup, you can get ordained for a day (or longer?). My cousins had a good friend officiate their wedding. She did a great job. :)

notgarystu and I got married by five friends. We did the legal marriage with a Justice of the Peace, to keep the state uninvolved with our true commitment, but for the ritualized/symbolic ceremony we decided to just have friends do it. It fucking rocked.

You know, other than the way Christianity is completely dominating the political landscape from being used as an excuse to discriminate against Muslims, dictate women's bodies through abortion and abstinence-only education, and stop evolution being taught in school. Forgive me if I give less of a fuck about the little things when the people in power are every bit as religious as ever.

*every bit as religious as ever and interested in forcing the most extreme aspects of said religion on the American people for their own purposes, I should say.

mte. It doesn't matter if the 99% are becoming less religious- rich/powerful people still are.

edited to fix my obvious grammar mistake (it's bed time for me)

"a group comprised of vehement atheists, agnostics or people without religious affiliation."

...why is "atheist" the only one with an adjective? And, y'know...not all atheists are automatically "vehement." Some of them just, y'know...don't believe in God. That's not inherently "vehement." :/

Well, the way it's used, "vehement" could also be the modifier for the other two nouns.

So that would mean only "vehement" atheists, agnostics, and people without affiliation" would be "nones." That puts the non-vehement where, exactly?

...I don't really want religion to go away. I just want insincere people to stop using it as a blunt instrument to promote hatred and oppress anyone who threatens their power, especially when they use a government office to do so.

I agree with this as a person who is "spiritual but not religious".

If someone wants to be religious...good for them. Just stop with all the beating people over the heads with it, telling people what to believe, and trying to tell them how to live their lives.

As an agnostic, I always get the feeling when reading these types of articles are mostly talking about Christianity and not much about other faiths. Since America has a major Christian population that makes sense, but why not specify that as "5 Signs That America Is Moving Away from Christianity?"

IDK, I like things to be specific.

My mom struggled to accept I won't be joining the church since it's very important to her but she eventually accepted it. She only suggests I joined the progressive churches out there whenever I go off on a subject, which is nice but still annoying.
