Whether the TSA remains a government entity or most of its functions get privatized, the people employed by it are going to remain just as fucked by their bosses, the people subjected to the agency's injustices are going to remain just as violated, and the security theatre will remain precisely that: theatre.

The key isn't the privatization, it's this part:  Instead, the agency should number no more than 5,000, and carry out his original intent, which was to monitor terrorist threats and collect intelligence.

No more default groping at the airport.

Well, that's rich. How much would he stand to profit if it were privatized? It's already been profitable for Michael Chertoff, and that's in its current form as a public agency. This dude's going to call for it to be privatized, then a year after he gets out of public office he'll magically find himself working as a VP of pencil procurement at some private security firm with multiple large contracts at major airports.

Sounds about right. In the end contractors will cost more and do a worse job. -- that is *always* the way it goes :-/

I thought the reason TSA was established in the first place was because the private contractors engaged by airports were doing such an uneven and generally shitty job. As bad as things are, I can't see them being improved by the lowest private bidder. But rethinking the whole thing...not such a bad idea.

Privatized, my ass. It ought to be done away with completely. But not until after the economy is back on its feet.
