It's quite sad how Rustin is (and other Black LGBT CRM leaders or contributors are) basically silenced or downright erased in conversation and teaching of the Civil Right Movement. People are still be shocked that MLK Jr. actually advocated for LGBT rights. Hell, people forget that Coretta Scott King, until her death, was a vocal ally for LGBT rights.
I managed to learn about Rustin through a MLK documentary a few years back and was shocked how such an influential man really didn't get his due in discussing CRM but then I wasn't surprised because it was because he was gay, sadly.
I really hope more and more people learn about Black LGBT who were involved in the Movement.
I was going to admit I only heard of him a few years ago but now that I see some here have never heard of him, I guess the situation isn't necessarily improving.
His story is not only good, it's vital because it shows that these damn boxes are not and should not be separate. He should be among the gay heroes of the US.

Because I know the reason I've never heard of him is because LBGT people are erased from history curriculum in schools.
And I hope that CA passing a law to force them into the curriculum means he'll be getting some recognition here now.
