The city of Salem, Ore., shut down the yard sale of a woman who had been selling her belongings to pay for her medical bills. The reason? A city ordinance limits a home to hosting a yard sale three times a year, as first reported by ABC affiliate KATU ( Read more... )

Time to go around and ask the neighbors to host a garage sale on her behalf (3 per, of course). The neighbor who refuses is probably the dick who turned her in to code enforcement.

I have to say, I don't blame the code enforcement folks. When there is a code, and someone complains, they don't have a lot of options. They obviously only warned her, instead of fining her immediately.

Also, the sad part of this is that universal health care would make shit like this not happen anymore. But of course, that's communism, or something...

I haven't checked the comments yet but I can almost guarantee that all of them will complain about the ordinance that shut down her yard sale but none of them will complain about the system that doesn't provide health care. Forest for the trees.

Don't check the comments. A couple people do point this out, but most are attacking the woman. Then the others attack "ObamaScare" medicine.

Behold! The glories of free market and non-state healthcare!

I hope they're able to work something out, and maybe set up something for people to donate. I hate seeing people sell their possessions just for basic care; my mother had to sell one of her childhood prize saddles to help pay for my father's heart care after his heart attack, which broke my heart and hers because we'd always agreed that I would get it when she passed on to keep it in the family. :\

Working together so everyone can have health care is just common sense. Why else have a government!

The sort of loss you describe is expected, I guess. I almost wish I could view how this period in US history is seen in 300 years. Dark Ages, I suspect.

>:( I agree with you, OP. Anybody who would complain about a neighbour having a yard sale to fund their medical treatments is a real asshole.

And that neighbor who "complained" is a piece of shit.

Not enough "this" in the world.

(Not enough middle fingers in the world, either, frankly. Rage.)
