The Web Will Win the Cyber War
Last week from Monday through Friday, the Russian-language segment of the popular blog server LiveJournal once again was subject to a series of DDoS attacks. I hope LJ continues to stand by the Russian users. And I'll stick with LJ even if there's more attacks. I've been here nine years and I've still never found a better place to kill time online.

Eight going on nine, and same thing. It's sad that it's not as active as it once was, but I love the communities I read here and I haven't found anything that beats it.

The community feature is still the best thing LJ has going for it. Blogrings and the like don't compare, and a blog without the community aspect is mostly narcissistic in the end. I don't post in my own LJ anymore but I won't leave until none of my communities are posting anymore.

And I just had my 9 year anniversary!

Frankly, LJ's sticking by the Russian users has made me forgive them quite a bit for Strikethrough. Certainly it's taught me what's more important -- and what freedom of speech truly is.

I just wish US fandom would learn the same.

Me too. To the point where I'm considering re-upping the Paid account I let lapse back in 2007, when I was so pissed at them for how poorly they were handling the issues of that year.

lol, you were still holding a grudge over Strikethrough? LJ isn't even owned by SixApart anymore.

So this is why I get kind of pissy at USAians who are all "well why doesn't LJ just delete the Russian blogs?" as if their access to their fanfic and RP comms is more important than political activism.

So much of this. I'm primary on LJ for fandom reasons, but damn people, get some perspective.

Same here. I can live with my fandom outlets being cut off, but for people to have their only venue for political expression squashed--not cool. Glad LJ's sticking with them.

Seriously. I rarely participate in political discussion on LJ, but I can only hope it continues to thrive. It is, after all, infinitely more important than my access to ONTD or old fanfiction.
