Keystone XL pipeline would screw over farmers, threaten aquifer

The other morning I took a call, like so many other calls I’ve taken over the last four years, from another Dakota farmer wondering how his land may be affected by the Keystone XL pipeline. A broad coalition of concerned groups in Omaha, NE -- including the Sierra Club -- are doing their best to fight this thing, or at least obtain the protections enjoyed by farmers in Iowa. I hope we can do at least that much. One good sign is that the process in the legislature has been removed from a deadline.

My bottom line is that spills WILL happen. They always do because no matter how much technology improves, human error will exist.

And people who work in oil refining in Canada (because it's damn hard to find other jobs in some places, believe it or not) and whose jobs will be exported to the US. I can't believe PM Harper has the nerve to portray this pipeline as a good thing for Alberta.

One of the comments at the source asked if it couldn't just be refined at the source. The next reply was OMGNO THOSE WOULD BE JOBS IN CANADA! So if online commenters get that...

Fixed that for ya. The oil industry owns us and nobody cares. Whatever ever oil wants, oil gets. And if the Republicans win Conrad's seat in the next election, ND's representatives won't even have to pretend to listen to the few people who have grievances about this. And when that big oil spill finally comes...
