There are still Republican legislators in Massachusetts? Will wonders never cease?

We have pretty interesting political demographics in this state-- there are pockets that are REALLY REALLY conservative. Nobody really cares too much about gay marriage or abortion, aside from by-the-book Catholics, but there are factions of working-class whites who still harbor racist resentment over the busing thing in the 70s, and the good old "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" crowd of rich preppies. None of that seems to matter in statewide elections, but if the conservatives are all concentrated in certain areas, you can get Republicans into the statehouse.

How do you explain Scott Brown then? (serious question)

Pages and pages of articles have been written about Brown's election. For starters, notice I used the word SEEMS. Obviously, Republicans have won statewide office here-- every governor between Dukakis and Patrick was a Republican, after all. In Brown's case, if you want my opinion, it's primarily because he ran a great campaign and Martha Coakley ran one of the worst campaigns ever.
