Bill proposes trans protection to B.C. Human Rights Code

Spencer Chandra Herbert says transgender people should be explicitly protected from discrimination by the B.C. Human Rights Code.

The NDP MLA for Vancouver-West End is introducing in the legislature today (May 26) a member’s bill called the Gender Identity and Expression Human Rights Recognition Act.

Here's hoping that this bill will pass before the inevitable provincial election. There's not much time. If we don't have one in 2011, we will have one very early in 2012.

LOL. I wrote my federal representative in support of doing this at the federal level and this was his response:

Dear Kent,

Thank you for your letter regarding Bill C-389. Bill C-389 is a private member's bill (PMB) and as such, it was debated in accordance with the rules of Parliament and the House of Commons for PMBs and was subject to a free vote.

I personally condemn discrimination for any reason and all members of society needed to be treated fairly and equally. However, I believe that the issue of discrimination is already well covered under the law, although I understand why the framers of the bill would like to see that strengthened.

As a result, when this bill came up for a vote on December 8, 2010 I voted against it. However, the House of Commons did pass it and it is currently at Report Stage in the House, prior to debate and Third Reading ( ... )

And men with ill intent might go into women's restrooms!

There are at least a couple reps who say they'll continue to try at a federal level. I imagine it's going to happen so the question is when.
