I'd change my name in a second, but that's only because I hate it.

Did you guys talk about who would take whose name? I saw couples have that talk and was glad to see it wasn't assumed that it was the woman's job to do it...but I don't know how widespread that is.

I never used my middle name for anything (never really liked it) so I got rid of it, bumped my maiden name to middle and took my husband's last name and all together now my name is awesome. I have a very unusual first name and together with my husband's last name it makes me sound like some kind of fairy princess. \m/

i guess lesbians don't exist at yahoo.
yup. but maybe we're at a bit of an advantage in this situation; just getting married is enough drama for most families, so we get to set our own traditions for the rest of the ceremony without as much controversy.

if I get married, I hope that she and I would decide on a hybrid name of our maiden/paternal names and maybe also try to mix in the maiden names of our moms.

I didn't exempt lesbians from the topic when I read it. :( But I do live in a place with same-sex marriages so my default is inclusive, I guess.

We made a family name since we couldn't settle on taking with one of ours.

I've joked with my boyfriend that we should combine our last names and both change them. I think it makes a lot of sense though, if both of the last names can be combined I mean. If you want to start a family with someone, it makes sense to have the same last name. But I don't like the idea of losing my name and taking his. I think it's a good compromise.

(we'll probably never get married though, we have issues haha -- but I think it's a good solution!)
