"Paul Ryan is Full of Shit," or "Let's Destroy Our Social Safety Net So CEOs Can Buy New Jets"

From Paul Krugman's NYT blog:

"I’m in an airport lounge, for my sins, and there’s no avoiding the TV running CNN. And there’s David Gergen, telling me that the Ryan plan, whatever its flaws, is “serious”. So I guess that’s the Very Serious People line.

James Fallows has a very good take on this; my version would be this: I don’t think a budget ( Read more... )

My mom is close to retirement and the idea of her not being able to afford healthcare scares the shit out of me. I just hope I'll be able to afford to help her out because goodness knows she's helped me out longer than most parents would.

I have an email list for my family. Much of the generation above me is Republican, and we often debate the issues of the day.

They're all hunky dory with Ryan's vouchers for Medicare. Of course, they HAVE theirs already, but I'm 48, so I will be under the 55 year old cut off.

I finally got fed up and posted "Well, isn't that nifty. You all will be fine. Me, with my newly-diagnosed type 1 diabetes? I guess I'll just die at 67, because I won't be able to afford my insulin. Hope that makes you all happy!"

Apparently this made my aunt call my mother crying, saying I was being mean.

*eyeroll*

Too bad Wisconsin doesn't realize it that Paul Ryan is full of shit.

I really don't want to think of what his plan would do to my dad. My dad got into a car accident years ago and got a metal rod put into his leg. The rod is now digging into his hip bone causing him a lot of discomfort. He needs two surgeries for it: one to remove the rod, and then another to fix the leg. He doesn't want to do it now when it would mostly be covered by my mom's health care and his Medicare. No way he would do it if Paul Ryan's plan got passed.

I hope he does it now. I've been without often enough that I believe in doing all you can while you can.

I am so sick and tired of hearing that tax cuts for the wealthy are some kind of magic job creation plan. It didn't work when Reagan said so. It didn't work when Bush said so. Does anyone really believe that it will work now? Who votes for these people? Do they lack memories, let alone math skills?

I am so looking forward to dumster diving in a few years when I'm forced out my job, have had my contracted pension rights stripped, and there's no social security or medicare. :-/

you know, i often wonder this myself. aside from the few wealthy individuals, who the hell supports these policies? or why? because this 'invisible hand' and the 'limited government' mantra is such BS.

and lol, i'm at a deficit net worth because of student loans so i'm not looking forward to our (regressive) future either.

Who supports it? Politicians who get their contributions from the wealthy, and who get their post-political career sinecure jobs on boards of directors from them.

true but i want to know who are the 'hard working Americans' that claim to support this. are they so easily swayed by propaganda? ... idk why but just when i thought i had resigned myself, i cannot understand such madness.
