This is kind of terrifying, actually. The idea that the Russian government would try to take down an entire platform, just to silence a couple of critics, is really disturbing.

Yeah, even if it's a case of LIHOP, i.e. the Russian government is turning a blind eye to some cybercriminals operating in ways convenient to its ends, it's disquieting in the extreme.
