George Bush played golf plenty himself....the only reason the golf jokes there had any validity was because at one point, he said he was "giving up golf" for the troops, or something. Which was one of the weirdest things he could have done, and also became really dumb and disingenuous when it was obvious he hadn't really given it up at all
