I started off with a feeling of, "That's good, thank goodness there isn't an uproar of violence against one another."

Then I read a little further and went " |:| "

I am curious why there's no looting and i'm sure it's a societal thing but I'm not sure about some of these comments. o_0 Maybe they know without a doubt that they will take care of each other or that their government will. Not every country has that same assurance.

Maybe because the people of New Orleans were completely abandoned and cut off completely from ALL resources for DAYS AND DAYS. By the time the water receded enough to get to a store, people were hot, starving, dehydrated, terrified, grieving, etc.

I'd have robbed the shit out of Albertson's too.

(And let's not even try to focus on the 3 people they caught stealing TVs and shoes)

And even still, stealing a box of brand new shoes at a time when you have to walk everywhere because your car was wedged in the neighbor's roof and the road is flooded is probably a good idea.

Yeah, I definitely don't blame them for doing it.

The irony is a lot of these "Wow, Japanese society is so helpful and loving toward one another I wish Amurika was like that" comments that I've heard in-person around here have all come from right-wing folk who wouldn't cross the road to piss on you if you were on fire. The hypocrisy is so stunning.

And, from what I've heard, they're usually directing it towards what happened after Katrina. So it's a doubly offensive 'why can't those black people be more like those japanese people?' thing going on. Ergh.

Yeah, when I read this comment:

They're the types of people you help out willingly because you know that they'll make full use of any opportunity to get back on their feet.

....I could just hear "...unlike those lazy black and brown people!" tacked on at the end in parentheses. I do think that there is something to be said for how the differences between American and Japanese society (e.g. individuality vs. the collective) could be playing a role here, but what a lot of the people above are saying essentially boils down to yet more so-called 'positive discrimination' towards Asians, IMO. Asians are hardworking, so of course you'd help 'em out willingly! Blech.

It's so funny, because these same people completely ignored what was going on in Iowa during their floods.
