The folks in the audience for Jay Leno’s safe-for-all-audiences Tonight Show clearly would’ve rather had a visit from some cuddly zoo animals than what they got: an extended and at times awkwardly tense visit from HBO’s Bill Maher.

Those last few lines he ended with were brilliant.

In the UK we're not really big on patriotism. It's more like we're little on patriotism. Patriotism in moderation seems to be our preference.

But yeah, it's an interesting point that the issue hasn't only been the over-the-top emphasis on patriotism, but the kinds of things considered patriotic.

I'd always been a little concerned by American patriotism because it seems to border on nationalism. There seem to be people who go on about how being an American is so great as if it's something they've earnt. There also seems to be this rhetoric whereby people have to keep saying "I love my country" in case anyone calls it into doubt. What's that all about?

I wish I knew. I was actually accused of hating America once on facebook, because I dared to say I wasn't grateful or proud to be here. (This was partially in response to Manning's treatment.) Apparently my feelings were an affront to others and thus meant I hated this great and wonderful ~Land of the Free.

He leaked the WikiLeaks info, and he's essentially being tortured by the US.

ETA: html fail. Twice. Sorry.

Anyone who stands in line in New York City for several hours to see Jay Leno doesn't need to be criticizing anyone else about... anything at all. Jay Leno is the entertainment-value equivalent of marshmallow fluff. Rancid marshmallow fluff.

I finally got to watch this, and I agree with everything Bill Maher just said, and I especially wish the last part was what Jon Stewart's "Restore Sanity" had actually been.
