IA with your assessment of the coverage of the family. CNN tonight was all "they had a suspicious fence around their backyard!" and "he had started wearing *gasp* black!"

Yeah, mte.

Why do we need to know that he liked 'progressive rock' or 'Donnie Darko'? I do too--does that mean I should be on a terror watch list? It's clear they're so desperate to build a picture of someone "mentally unstable" that they're grasping at teeny tiny straws.

Same. Blaming the assassination on mental illness--even if he were mentally ill, and it weren't just an absurd and bigoted knee-jerk--also makes little to no sense. I mean, men are more likely to commit violent crimes than women, but no one in the media is going "OH, IT'S BECAUSE HE'S A GUY." Because that would be ridiculous.

*Cough*

The Loughner detail seems to be trying to paint him as "deviant" and "strange" already: it's a form of distancing, to say "it's only people who do this that will act like he did, and not people like us so we're safe, it's not our - or our culture's fault".

"He always said, 'Hi, Mrs. Osler. How are you today?' When he left he made a point of coming over and saying, 'Thank you for having me over,'" said Roxanne Osler, noting that was not typical for Zach's friends.

Uh, then most of your son's friends aren't very polite...?
