I can think of so many reasons they might do this, from agreeing with him at least to a point and hiding evidence to being completely innocent in what happened and fearing retaliation, it seems pointless to speculate.

I'm therefore going to assume, until proven otherwise, they had no role in what happened and are as horrified as the rest of us. I can hardly even imagine what they must be feeling right now... to have a family member you knew as a tiny, helpless baby who giggled at everything grow up to do something like this.

My guess is that they are getting death threats.

Its not their fault their son did this unless they bought him the guns and drove him over and dropped him off. Or they were some sort of brain washers.
If politicians and their hate speak is not to blame, neither are his parents.

One thing thats really depressed me about the conversation on this horrific act has been the lack of the concept of personal responsibility.

This person was an adult, not a child. I dont care whats on tv or whats on the video games or what music you are listening to or what books you are reading.

No one is responsible for your actions except you, unless someone is using violence and threats to coerce you. And even then you are making a choice to not-fight (self preservation or a variety of other legitimate reasons.)

No one except the killer is responible here. Not rhetoric, not sarah palin, not glenn beck, not kieth olbermann. None of the books he read, the games he played, or the news he watched.

Personal responsibility.

Actually, no one is free from influence, but everyone is still personally responsible.

How about that.

Fear of retaliation, threats, and media harassment would be my guess.

The media and politicians are Ghouls, and they are feasting on the flesh of the dead right now, and I doubt the family wants to be part of it or even have their faces known.

There is really no way we can possibly know why they did this. It could really be anything.

I think it's fair to give them the benefit of a doubt and assume that they had no idea that he planned to go out and shoot a bunch of people that day. If this assumption is correct, than I bet their heads are absolutely spinning with grief and fear.

I remember reading an article last year written by the mother of one of the Columbine shooters. It was so sad and my heart really went out to her.

My first thought was they were being harassed. In this day and age, people are so easy to find, and the media is so pervasive that I'm amazed there weren't news vans in their yard by Saturday evening.

Second thought was the more sinister covering up of evidence. =X I'll stick with the first unless the second is proven, but I'm a little Pollyanna like that.

There were. An article about this mentions the news teams camped across the way from the house, and there's been footage from inside of some kind of shrine. As the FBI had previously been there and obtained evidence, I'd say the boarding up was to keep the media at bay.
