Docs optimistic, but Giffords in for long recovery

Recovering from a gunshot wound to the head depends on the bullet's path, and while doctors are optimistic about Rep. I really hope she can go back to being a Representative again.

Incredible to think of how much one person's split-second action can affect the rest of someone's life. Even if Griffords comes through with no physical differences, she's likely to be profoundly emotionally affected by this for the rest of her life. How could she not? Someone shot her in the fucking head because they disagreed with her politics. Insane.

God, I hate guns.

I can accept that they might have had some value historically, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.

I predict this case being used as an anecdote in psychology/brain anatomy textbooks to come because of the prominence and the sheer "the brain is fuckin awesome" of the story.

BTW for anyone who didn't see, the hospital press conference this morning revealed that there is no change in the level of swelling in the brain as evidenced by recent CAT scans, which doctor's say 'no change is good' at this point in time.

This poor woman. I'm glad she seems to be showing some positive recovery signs, but I can't imagine what it's like to be in a coma and brought out periodically, only to go under again.

I totally agree. I really hope she does well in her recovery, but brain injuries are fickle and like Dr. Aarabi said above, they are different in everyone.

My dad had several small strokes in October and he now has no peripheral vision (he had already lost some eyesight to diabetes) and is severely limited in his ability to get around. And while his personality hasn't drastically changed, the emotional damage is evident...
