Can Santa save Christmas in Washington?

Dec 20, 2010 16:15

I'm not a Christian, but like many Jews, I've envied Christmas since childhood. I like the twinkly lights, pink-cheeked carolers, heartwarming television specials, and exuberantly ho-ho-ho-ing Santa Clauses ... pretty much everything except the endless renditions of "Jingle Bells" warbling from every audio speaker in the country ( Read more... )

I've always found this "war on Christmas" stuff to be stupid. Especially the websites where people write up companies that wish "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas," claiming that every single person who says the former is trying to ruin Christmas for everyone. Most people don't walk about with little signs on their heads saying whether or not they celebrate Christmas, so the greeting is trying to be inclusive.

As for the politicians complaining about having to work up until the 24th, there are quite a few people who work up until that day, quite a few of them Christians.

Inclusiveness is apparently anti-American in this supposedly Christian nation.

None of it makes the least bit of sense to me.

Well, most of them. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, is very upset to be stuck in Washington. He complained that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, has been "disrespecting one of the two holiest of holidays for Christians and the families of all of the Senate" by making him work up until Christmas Eve.

Boo-fucking-hoo, asshole. Some people are working ON CHRISTMAS and hey, guess what? Some people don't even get to work this holiday season. Shut the fuck up.

Man, on the flip side of of Jews envying Christmas, I didn't have any Jewish friends as a kid, so I used to think that Jewish kids got seven Christmases, so like for Christmas I would get like 8-10 presents as a kid, I assumed that meant that they would get 7 days where they got 8-10 presents. I remember begging my mom to let us be Jewish so I could get 80 presents.

This. I grew up Christian but the kind of Christian that thought Christmas was evil. So I envied all of the kids with their winter holidays, but I always thought that Hanukkah was the coolest. 7 days of gifts AND latkes? Awesome!

I'd like to submit the theory that the true war on Christmas is, in fact, being waged by all the miserly fat cats who prefer to spend their money on luxuries at retail centers where they can verbally berate the employees, instead of letting their money get taxed. Taxing the rich would let little retail workers like me have a merry Christmas without handling so many entitled pricks. But these people seem pretty Scroogelike instead.

Now I kind of want Statler & Waldorf, er, I mean, Marley & Marley to show up at Congress and harass everyone with musical accompaniment.

This is the most sacred holiday for Christians.

Except for, y'know, Easter and all.

Also I am a firm believer-lover of holiday goodwill. That is Santa to me :3
