I'm of the opinion that at this point the only way up is if we hit absolute rock bottom. So hey, let the rich become even richer and the poor poorer and then out of the ashes of catastrophe there will rise a better nation. I mean no one wants to make the sacrifice now to raise taxes. We might as well just wait until we're completely screwed to fix things.

This. Between the financial meltdown, return to Gilded Age-levels of inequality, and the Tea Party, I've decided that this country needs a good dose of dictatorship/plutocracy/insert-repressive-political-regime-here in order for it to finally wake the fuck up.

Sucks that it looks like I'll be living through it, though. :/

I disagree. I think the powerful and wealthy would see a collapse as an opportunity to centralize power and wealth even further. Probably a world currency which means you have world government. All the money, and therefor all the power, controlled by a few hundred families. 10,000 pharaohs, 6 billion slaves.

And when collapse happens, people will be -demanding- government control. People will riot in the streets for the government to step in and take things over and "save the day."

The The top one-tenth of one percent of Americans would not be this wealthy if their earnings were not protected by government and bureaucracy. For example, the wall street banks wouldnt even -exist- if not for government bailouts. These few families regularly use government as the foil to protect their wealth. Giving the government more power just gives these wealthy wielders of influence more power ( ... )

I'm just waiting patiently for us to hit rock bottom (apt username, OP!). It sucks to have to admit such a thing, but at this point I'm just so exasperated by everything that I just want to be a spiteful bitch and let every asshole driving our country into the ground in the name of GAWD AND FREEDUMB just up and do it already, JFC. I'm tired of waiting! Let's get some 1984 and some Handmaid's Tale and crazy political machines and fundie garbage every which way because it seems like nothing will change until the middle class caves in and eats itself alive. :/

We've pulled ourselves out of worse scrapes, but we definitely had to tank to get there.

Heck yeah! Like the last time we hit bottom and all the rich people suddenly became poor and we came out of it with a much more equal society...

Wait, that didn't happen the last time we hit bottom?
Many of the people who are in the richest demographic are from the same families that were rich back then?
Many totalitarian regimes that killed millions of people arose as a result of the chaos that ensued the last time we hit rock bottom?
Most of the classes that were victimized the last time we hit bottom still have not recovered?

Well, who cares, I'll at least have some moral satisfaction of not having wasted any hard effort to actually fix things as I watch the world burn.

Thanks for totally assuming shit about me, I really appreciate it. Nice to know attending town hall meetings, writing to my Congressmen, going to protests, calling voters, volunteering my time and donating $ in support of candidates, etc etc ad nauseum means nothing. :Db
