Serbian police have clashed with protesters trying to disrupt a Gay Pride parade in the capital, Belgrade.

Police used tear gas against the rioters, who threw petrol bombs and stones at armed officers and tried to break through the security cordon for the march.

The protesters then set fire to the garage of the ruling Democratic Party's headquaters.

Fuck you. My family's values firmly include accepting all peoples and families and types of love and expression, which very much includes queer and trans people. So, yeah, fuck you and the hateful horse you rode in on.

Because there was and still is strong support from the president and the government. Besides if Serbia wants to join the EU in 4 years, things need to change fast. I'm not naive, but I guess it was mostly wishful thinking. Not all Balkan nations are that homophobic though. Sure, there is plenty of prejudice, but it rarely gets that violent. I'm pretty sure next year it won't be that bad and in 3 or 4 years it could be even peaceful. I guess hope really is the quintessential human delusion.

Well, Greece is a shining example obviously. There were no issues in Bulgaria or Romania either. There is a parade in Turkey and it's the second largest one after Athens. Things will improve and it will take less than a decade. Unfortunately change always starts like this - with unnecessary violence and anger.

Newspaper this morning made a point of saying that none of the participants in the Gay Pride were hurt. While that is good news at least, many police were injured defending the paraders. All in all, it's a mess :(
