Taliban officials know it’s sacrilegious to hope a mosque will not be built, but that’s exactly what they’re wishing for: the success of the fiery campaign to block the proposed Islamic cultural center and prayer room near the site of the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan. “By preventing this mosque from being built, America is doing us a big favor,” ( Read more... )

I am totally lazy enough to repost my comment from elsewhere:

Newsweek is so fundamentally centrist but I still really love that they even bother to run stories like this.

What I want to know? Whether this guy they interviewed was using the term mosque because even the Taliban don't know what Park51 really is, or whether he's using the term because it's a useful bit of propaganda for the Taliban as well.

Makes me think of James Fenton's Ballad of the Imam and the Shah, which can be considered Orientalist because Fenton portrays it occurring only within Middle Eastern countries, but the kind of cyclical fucking ugliness it portrays is a part of humans everywhere and, imo, the final verse conveys that.

The song is yours. Arrange it as you will.
Remember where each word fits in the line
And every combination will be true
And every permutation will be fine:

From policy to felony to fear
From litany to heresy to fire
From villainy to tyranny to war
From tyranny to dynasty to shame

From poverty to malady to grave
From malady to agony to spite
From agony to misery to hate
From misery to policy to fight!

Don't tell the people calling supporters of the "Mosque" anti-American that they are the ones fostering anti-American attitudes! It may hurt their brains!

That's why I can't understand why they don't get along. Both want to take the world back centuries.

“We talk about how America tortures with waterboarding, about the cruel confinement of Muslims in wire cages in Guantánamo, about the killing of innocent women and children in air attacks-and now America gives us another gift with its street protests to prevent a mosque from being built in New York,” Zabihullah says. “Showing reality always makes the best propaganda.”

Up until now I always thought the Taliban fueled hatred with made-up stories, but they're using facts, so how does one even begin to counter these issues? God his last line just makes it so much more depressing. This is why the Taliban grow stronger everyday...
