he is correct about the environment being different, as deficits relative to GDP were nowhere near where they are today, and we've had the gap between government and private sector wages blow out in favor of federal employees, especially since 2000. When the avg government worker now makes double someone in the private sector thanks to outrageous pensions and healthcare benefits, shutting down govt won't be the political winner for Democrats as it was before.
