Racism is Over. Obvi.

As of late this particular sentiment has been stated to me or friends of mine in numerous forms numerous times. And, as of late this hasn’t come from other Negroes (which for a brief period in ‘08 it started to.) This reoccurring phenomenon has often come from non-blacks in various stages of unrest do to our...ahem...” ( Read more... )

Dumb video. Rape? This dude looks like he was born in the 80's. Nonetheless, I know that racism is still alive. I also know that racism is something more than whites against blacks. It can be, and is, flipped the other way around. Also, has this guy heard about the protests against Muslims in New York lately? This country and other countries around the world are full of racist people. Where does this racism come from? We could start with religion and major media outlets.

This guy sucks and he's not even remotely funny. He's not helping the problem, he's part of the problem.

Is that list of links supposed to be a response? I can't tell if its a spam post or not. If it is a legitimate response, I don't think you understood anything I have said at all. First of all, those links are all generalizing one race. These are blatant examples of racism/prejudice. None of you have any control of the skin you were born with. Racism is not something you are born with either, it is taught. No one has any right to demonize another race, or their own race for that matter. Are you trying to make me admit that I am lesser than another person, or group of persons? If so, I won't admit to anything like that.I don't look at myself as white, or any other label you want to put on me. I'm a just human, as cheesy as that may sound. Poke fun at me all you want, its not going to solve anything. You are only trying to provide answers to the wrong questions: a distraction from the foundation of these problems.

If you really want to fight something, how about poverty? The crumbling public school system?

It was a response, and you are marinating in so much white privilege that it's almost kind of amazing.

Nothing you say is new or me "not getting it." Dude, seen it before, and it is just as head-in-the-sand, ignoring-reality tired as it was the first god only knows times I've seen it.

People are giving you links for a reason, try reading them. You may learn something. Instead of sticking your fingers in your ears and ignoring people, trying listening to what they say.

Oh, and:

If you really want to fight something, how about poverty? The crumbling public school system?

Of Collateral Damage and Roosting Chickens: Reflections on Racism, the Economy and the High Cost of White Ambivalence

You act like racism has no impact on poverty and the crumbling public school system. Guess what.

It's easy for you to say crap like "I'm just a human" when you, as a white person, will always be treated as not only individual but the default, and when "race" per se has zero negative impact on your day-to-day life. Unfortunately, that is NOT ( ... )

Dude, I get it, white people are the majority/the default. Does that make every single one of them look down upon other races and cultures? Does being the default, make your racist by default. Am I simply racist for being white? Instead of running around in circles here, why don't you explain to me where you think the source of racism comes from?

Also, you are making it sound as if what I'm saying isn't genuine. Like I don't really see everyone as equal individuals. Is the system that we have in the world today constructed to see everyone as equal? Hell no it isn't. I never said its not different living in this world as a minority. I can not account for another's subjective experience, just like no one can really account for mine.

White people have white privilege. It means they don't have to worry about not getting a job, or a tenancy on the basis of their skin colour. The concept of white privilege does not address gender, sexuality, poverty, physical ability, or any number of other things that lead to people being discriminated against. This post and video is solely about race. That means that introducing other issues, like white poverty (as in your second comment), is derailing. This is explained in the first two links homasse gave you.

Being white doesn't automatically make you a member of the KKK. It does mean that there are certain patterns of thinking that you are likely to have, having been brought up in the majority, that you might never realise are derogatory to people who aren't white. And frankly, you've busted out a whole bunch of them in this post. No one's saying you're planning to start burning crosses, but you are being completely dismissive of the point of view of black Americans here.

Why do you think I'm going to sit here and waste my time answering your questions, when the links I and other people have given you ALREADY ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS?

And the problem isn't that what you're saying isn't genuine, it's that every damn ignorant person wanting to be hand-held through racism 101 even as they dig their heels in and resist it says the same damned thing and acts like it's new and different information.

I've given you the information and places to look for more information; I'm not going to chop it up into tiny pieces and spoon-fed it to you.

I'm not sure if anyone in this thread will get a notification of this, or if anyone of these users are still active, but I wanted to come back to express how much this exchange really shifted my perspective and ultimately changed my life. All too often, I find people saying that online discussions never go anywhere, and what is called hashtag activism doesn't do anything, but its simply not true. I recently cited this exchanged in a Political Philosophy class about gender when we were discussing privilege; this was the first time I heard about it. I didn't walk away from this initially a changed person, but it planted a seed of understanding that grew over the years and still continues to grow. Please know that as difficult as it was to talk to me, and to talk to other that still think like I once did, your efforts really do have an impact.

Basically, I just wanted to say thanks, because I am a sappy sentimental type who reflects on stuff like this.

I had a feeling that I was going to see a response like this. I have done some reading on those links, and there are some good points brought up, but I am not agreeing on this idea of white privilige that YOU (homasse) are presenting to me. It doesn't sound like it promotes any kind of equality. The main problem I had with the video was the generalization that all white people think racism is over. Then I brought it up to a friend of mine the other day, and he admitted to believing that racism is over. So, I now I eat my words.

I really don't appreciate being called ignorant, just because I'm not totally agreeing with your beliefs. You never answered my question, so I'm guess you don't want to have any sort of real disucussion with me, but would rather try to force your beliefs down my throat. Since I really don't feel like taking this further, I'll just let you keep assuming that you understand me, and let you judge me from a couple paragraphs. I should at least thank you for the links. Take care!

Some people just don't. If I had more time and patience, I might spoon-feed this guy Baby's First Racism 101 like they want, but I have an apartment to clean and a Farmville farm to attend to. XD
