Uh. I'm at home because the job market sucks balls right now and I can't do anything with my degree. :/

This. I would NOT be living at home right now if I could get a job that would pay me enough money to move out!

This whole idea of discussing why 20somethings are the way they are rubs me the wrong way. Our way of life is different because society has changed. The people who made those changes are our parents' and grandparents' generations, not ours.

Someone mentioned to me the other day that her grandfather was telling her she's flaky because she's in her late 20s and has already had 2 or 3 jobs. That's the reality now and it's certainly not our fault.

THHHIIISSSS.

My mom is always insinuating that my husband and I (we're both in our 30's) are flakes because we've both had several different jobs (hell, we've had several different entire careers). She had the same job for 30 years until she retired. I'm sorry but jobs like that simply don't exist in most fields any more. Companies don't give a shit about supporting and developing their work-forces, why should their work-forces give a shit about sticking around long enough to get outsourced or downsized or wage-frozen? Fuck that shit.

We've had this discussion in my business course as well. Older generations see value in sticking to one job and hoping to climb the ladder while younger people consider it more beneficial to shop around for higher positions and jobs that will offer something at one point and help advance the next day. Personally I think it depends, if I find a job that WILL allow me to grow and I won't have to leave, great, but I know how much I appreciate change and new chances, so that's a common trait amongst people my age. I don't like being lumped though, because plenty 20somethings will surprise you with their "not of this generation" view on something.

So 'adulthood' is defined by conforming to traditional/stereotypical gender roles?

I think I'll remain 'childish' over here, thanks. Jfc.

The more modern and thoughtful approach is being on your own and financially independent.

Unfortunately, that's just not happening either. Mostly because the job market's tough, and for the last 8 years the housing market's been extremely tough. :/

Fair enough, but as someone has addressed, the economic issues that prevent us from being completely financially independant were not in our control, and are now fucked.
Thus we are fucked, but hey, that's totally our fault, right? Because we were the ones in charge of the banks and....oh wait, no we weren't.

*headdesks repeatedly* It happens too often in society, this blaming of the younger generations for problems. How can we be the perpertrators of problems that have nothing to do with us until we're stung?

Exactly my point. It's very Fight Clubish where we're no longer in control of our own destinies unless you happen to be absurdly lucky. It's sad seeing college educated friends make less than I do, and I only make about $12 an hour.
