Safety Regulations Will Scare Away Thrill Seeking Miners. Gov Not on The Job of Saving Lives

Aug 02, 2010 20:18

Paul claims mine safety regulations are unnecessary because ‘no one will apply’ for jobs at dangerous mines.

In April, two miners were killed at the Dotiki Mine in Western Kentucky after the mine’s roof collapsed. The non-union mine had been cited for 840 safety violations by federal inspectors since 2009, and the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety ( Read more... )

“The bottom line is: I’m not an expert, so don’t give me the power in Washington to be making rules,” Paul said

Hear that, people of Kentucky? DON'T VOTE FOR RON PAUL 2010! Straight from the horse's mouth!

You’d try to make good rules to protect your people here. If you don’t, I’m thinking that no one will apply for those jobs.

The fact that the mine exploded and killed people who were working there would seem to completely disprove this silly theory.

I think Rand Paul lives in a magical world, where no one has to take *any* job to keep fed and under a roof. And there may be unicorns.

It might be nitpicky but is he arguing that the FEDERAL government does not have any responsibility to set safety standards or that government in general does not?

You never can be sure with Rand Paul since I'm pretty sure he's a libertarian, but I think he's referring only to the federal government. He seems to imply that he thinks West Virginia's voters are better equipped to set standards within their own state:

“You live here, and you have to work in the mines. You’d try to make good rules to protect your people here. If you don’t, I’m thinking that no one will apply for those jobs.”

Okay, I'm not entirely sure how setting regulations work but wouldn't lawmakers hire/consult experts anyway?

Is this real life?

I mean, has this guy ever picked up a history book? Does he not understand how dangerous jobs like these were before government regulation, and how dangerous they still are today?

... Jesus wept.

His world is a magical one full of skittles, rainbows, and dancing unicorns, where the Invisible Hand manages all and rights all wrongs fairly and dispassionately.

Meanwhile, over here in reality...
