Hello, I'm a Mac, and I'm helping fuel the war in the Congo
by Brooke Shields

Hello, I'm a Mac, and I'm helping fuel the war in the Congo - currently the deadliest conflict in the world. So are PCs, cell phones, digital cameras and other consumer electronics. That's what Apple's famous "I'm a Mac ... And I'm a PC" ads don't tell you. So I and ( Read more... )

Feeling really guilty for owning an iPod right now. I'm glad this PSA was made.

Check with your local police or city hall about any potential permit requirements.
If there's an online community for your town, try to drum up interest for attendees/co-organizers there (or general Oregon comms).

I don't buy a lot of electronics, just the things I couldn't get by without - a laptop and phone. I don't have an MP3 player, have never had a new TV, etc. I'm always nervous about buying refurbished or used items, but I think in the future that's what I'm going to do even if in the case of phones it'll cost me more.

I wish one could at least build a responsible desktop, but I get the feeling that's not possible either. :/

Feeling pretty vindicated for avoiding Apple like the plague all these years. People always rolling their eyes; now those of us who never drank the Kool-Aid have something a bit more damning we can point to, other than "Steve Jobs is a manipulative shitbag and I'm not interested in droning after shiny toys, thanks."

You're not vindicated because Apple is not alone in this :/ I used to own a HP... It's there in the article. Now I use an ASUS... It's not there but I'm quite sure it's tainted all the same.

Actually, I am. I know perfectly well it's not just Apple, as this is not the first time I've read this article or seen the video. But Apple IS the company that makes the most shiny, useless toys and has built an empire addicting people to the latest bit of gadgetry they come up with every year. So yes, I do feel like I've been on the right track avoiding them all these years (ever since the Mac, which raised my hackles the minute it came out).

Also, I do not own a cell phone, .mp3 player, game system, etc. I have my desktop, my TV, and my DVD player and feel no need for anything else. Sue me if I prefer to stay out of the race to consume, dude.

okay, I wasn't accusing you of anything. Your first post gave me the notion that you were blaming Apple and Apple alone for the situation in Congo, sorry if I missunderstood your words.
