Many years ago I read an article, by Martin Gardiner I think, about Scientology and how Hubbard had decided a religion would be more profitable than a self-help scam. Shortly afterward, I found a copy of the first edition of Dianetics in a university library. It was incredibly misogynistic and full of ludicrous pseudo-scientific claims about "engrams." I can never forget that this "religion" was founded by a man who apparently believed most women hated their children and had attempted unsuccessfully to abort them with knitting needles.
