Somehow disgusting enough that I managed to have a thought that wasn't just "lol fracking" this late at night. I wish I was surprised at these things, but I'm just not anymore. It's been clear for a long time that corporate interest will always trump the rights of the citizens of this country to have clean drinking water and safe food. I can only hope that something changes soon. I honestly don't even know where to begin in fixing this problem.

Does anyone have a link to a news story that was posted here a few months ago about coal mining poisoning the water in Appalachia?

This is why I don't understand the people who go all "OMG LET THE COMPANIES ROAM FREE! REMOVE GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS! THE FREE MARKET WILL FIX ALL OUR WOES!" Companies care for profit - as long as they are able to pollute without anyone noticing, they will do so. The free market does not force them to behave ethically (unless their pollution gets so strong that it kills most of their customer base, in which case they might reconsider).

Awesome. :|

I'm not in Colorado, but they're drilling all over the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, too. There's a drilling site visible from my backyard and they're in the fracking process right now. It's loud as hell, which I know only feeds into the "teehee fracking" trend going on here, but that's the way it is. Now I'm going to be tempted to see if I can light my bathroom sink on fire. :/

Seriously, wtf.

Waxman also revealed two of the largest gas drilling companies have pumped hundreds of thousands of gallons of diesel-based fluids into the ground in violation of a voluntary agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency ( http://www.democracynow.org/2010/2/23/congress_to_investigate_safety_of_natural )

WTF.

I love it, "The state agencies responsible for regulating oil and gas pollution say they are satisfied with the current level of regulation, and downplayed the risk that natural gas contamination could lead to the type of water pollution that may have caused cancer in Texas."

I'm sure the high rates of leukemia have NOTHING to do with the fact that water is so polluted it's FLAMMABLE...No big deal, just kills the germs!

Ahhhhhh stupid corporations worrying about fucking money...I don't understand how people who lead these corporations/businesses/whatever can see the effects they are having, give some BS news story saying "everything's fine keep drinking the water!" and freaking sleep at night! How do you tell somebody something is fine that is causing cancer??? (I've worked at a children's cancer hospital before, so this blows me away)
