Are those before pics seriously without any retouching at all? Because all I see is perfect skin and not a hair out of place anyway....

Someone had too much fun with the blur and smudge tools. That is not subtle unless you're comparing it to that terrifying image before the cut.

And seriously, half that article was how to use his makeup. The hell.

Define and deepen: Create definition and depth with a concealer two shades darker than your skin tone. Apply to the socket of the eye, the temples, the hollows of the cheeks and down the sides of the nose, to further heighten the lifted appearance.

Concealer? Wouldn't using a darker blush be more practical?

It looks more like a skintone and you can blend it more easily than blusher. Blusher is pinkish generally and you don't get pink temples.

lots of blushes people use to define their cheekbones and make certain parts of their face look ~deeper~ are a more brown color though. If you go to a makeup store asking for blush that'll do the job, it'll be brown.

True, but it's still a more natural look to get concealer that blends better. Bit of a faff, but effective. Make-up is painting for the face and really it's just mixing the skintone pallette. Wow, I feel pretentious just reading that. ;)

and the women still look like themselves.

I read this, and then I noticed in the first before/after the woman's jawline was adjusted to make her face appear less squarish.

Fail.

Wait, are you saying it CAN'T BE DONE WITH MAKEUP ALONE???
