this would be a good way for Reid to win the good graces of the progressives. Progressives are pretty anti-Reid, and I count myself among them.

HOWEVER, and this really hasn't been talked about enough, but even assuming health care is passed, they're saying it will be 3-4 years before it goes into effect. UNACCEPTABLE. People are dying now and need insurance now and if they were able to get Medicare in place within six months in the '60s, we can certainly get this going in six months. Four years is too damn long. By that time the balance of the legislature might be tilted right, and they can stop the whole thing before there's even a chance for it to take effect.

As for Saint Olympia of Maine, Her Highness needs to realize that she is not the end-all be-all of the Senate for fuck's sake. Alan Grayson said it best: Olympia Snowe was not elected President.

I'm also down with the opt-out. You know places like Texas and South Carolina will opt out if anyone does, and that will give us a real chance to compare progress.

Well, and then if their citizens want to opt-in badly enough because they and their family members are dropping dead and going broke, guess they'll start figuring out that their elected officials might need a bit of a housecleaning!

See, even SC and Texas could end up with the public option. Both Perry and Sanford have enemies from their own party within the state legislatures who are more than willing to override their ~fiscally conservative~ decisions.

The only way this could be better is if Susan Collins stands up and casts a yea for the public option. Then turns to Snowe and yells "SEE? I CAN GET ATTENTION TOO! SO SUUUUUCK ON THAT!!!!!"

Really I'm ok with the opt-out, because when it comes down to it, how many goverments are really going to say no to the public option? Think of how many red legislatures overrode their governors to take hte stimulus money.

I agree. This brings the discussion back to the state level, where governors and state legislators have to face their actual citizens. When the states that are in the most dire straits have to look their citizens in the eye and make that decision, something tells me we won't be seeing many opt-ing out. It also means it becomes less about national politics, and blaming President Obama for.....well, whatever.....and more about making decisions based on reality.

Oh, and btw:

Dear GOP, you want to talk about the 10th amendment and states' rights? Here ya go! Have at it, tiger!

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it,

Me.

ikr. Reminds me of the people who are going "omg, we're in for a bloodbath in 2010 because so-and-so is down in the polls". umm you're willing to concede a year in advance? OK. obvs the right-wing had a good summer but they peaked too early. The pendulum is swinging in our favor again

Haha yeah, Karl Rove and ~THE MATH~. People are going "what are we gonna dooo if Reid/Dodd lose", and I don't see either of those happening. Dodd cause he has a huge war chest, and Reid because despite his milquetoast Senate persona, he's pretty hardcore when it comes to Nevada. If they're still down in the polls this time next year, I'll worry. Until then everyone needs to relax and Republicans need to quit gloating. They can't even find anyone to run in their top targets like VA-05 and whatever Grayson's district is. kinda hard to take over the House with like, no recruits.

Fuck Snowe. I like her and her stances, usually, but I do not like her enough to consider her worthy of this kind of gravitas. And fuck her for using this unfortunate situation to stack the political deck in her favor.

Yeah it's nice when she takes a principled stand WITHOUT going to the media about it, like voting for Franken's anti-rape amendment. But when they have these ~moderate~ circlejerks it's so annoying. There are plenty of actual moderates in the Senate like Mark Warner and Kay Hagan who are in favor of the public option, but there's a handful that have to make things difficult for everyone.
