My father is a Purple Heart recipiant of the Vietnam War. He also suffered from PTDD and drug use. The VA saved his life, and now I actually have a functioning parent at the age of 24.

My Father served, and he received two medals (but not akin to the Purple Heart), though his story ended up far different than yours...VA medical care wasn't much a part of it...

But, well, I at least have an idea of where you're coming from. I'd feel quite similarly if I were in your shoes.
