About forcing Afghanistan to change it's ways and the culture of patriarchy: I sort of believe the change has to come from the society itself. Foreign countries can help the citizens learn about outside world, and finance women's associations, but ultimately I believe forcing the society to change is not in the power of other countries.
I definitely agree with this, but at the same time I do think that a little well deserved international outrage is in order. It wont change the attitudes, but if it will convince/force them to change the law, that's better than nothing. At least then the men of that country wont be able to hide behind the law if they do such things.
I agree with this as well. In my above comment about NATO, I should've clarified that I don't expect them to change Afghanistan entirely. Western democracy and morals, ideals, etc. just won't happen in Afghanistan ever. Period. But it would be nice if NATO stepped up and stated that the horrid legal abuse and rape of women is not something they'll fight for. This law is disgusting and the fact that it was passed just makes my skin crawl.
